Pro-Life
I am a pro-life Democrat.
I value and defend life from conception until natural and unaided death. To be a pro-life Democrat means opposing abortion and euthanasia but it also means something more. It means fighting against all issues that destroy human life including capital punishment, genocide and unjust war. Furthermore, it means working to end extreme poverty, defending human rights and promoting social justice.
Abortion: Being pro-life means opposing abortions, but it goes beyond being simply pro-birth. Unfortunately, while abortion has become a wedge issue used by political parties to divide voters, little has been done to address the underlying causes and issues that force women to make this tragic decision. I believe there is common ground to be reached on this heated issue and we should work across party lines to reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies in this country. We must fully support women who chose life by helping them care for and nurture their children. I will strongly defend life by working to reduce abortions and supporting those who choose life through the promotion of policies that nurture, educate, and protect children throughout their lifespan.
Stem Cell Research: Stem cell research has generated valuable discourse in this country. This research holds tremendous potential to treat and cure numerous diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, juvenile diabetes, heart disease, muscle damage, spinal cord injuries, and even some types of cancer.
I believe one can be both pro-life and pro-research. I will support ways to unlock the potential of stem cell research that is ethical and respects human life.
